Golf in Carrollton is a mood, oscillating between country club pressure and the kind of laid-back round where nobody checks your collar. I’ve spent enough dawns here to know the difference between a marble-smooth green and a fairway that’s seen better days.

You’ll find everything from the manicured intimidation of Stonebriar, where you might get bounced for a faded polo, to Sherrill Park’s honest municipal charm. One course even had a cart girl with better timing than my own hydration plan.

So grab your bag, leave the ego at home, and check out the full rundown below.

Highlights
Two pristine course options
Greens smooth, playable always
Best cart girl coverage
Staff friendly, truly amazing
Early tee times easy

I rolled into Indian Creek with low expectations, mostly because I had been up since four in the morning and my coffee was doing heroic work. The place immediately softened my grump. Two courses, both pristine, and the greens rolled like someone had ironed them overnight. The cart girl appeared exactly when my soul needed a cold drink, and her timing was better than most meteorologists. Early tee times were easy to snag, which matters when you want to beat the heat and the slowpokes. The staff, genuinely friendly, didn't make me feel like a trespasser. I left almost smiling. Almost.

Well-maintained carts and greens
Strict dress code, plan ahead

Stonebriar is the country club that makes you check your collar before you even park. Two challenging courses, both beautiful in that manicured, intimidating way. The facilities are spotless, spacious, and smell faintly of leather and ambition. Event service was quick, attentive, and handled my group's endless requests without a single eye roll. Carts hummed, greens held their line, and the dress code is strict enough that I nearly got turned away for my slightly faded polo. Plan ahead or come prepared to borrow a jacket. I grumbled, but I complied. Worth it.

Maridoe is pure golf, no distractions, no nonsense. The greens are impeccable and brutally fast, like putting on a marble countertop. The course is scenic but unforgiving, and I lost three balls on holes I won't name. Service is first-class, the locker room swanky enough to make you feel like a minor celebrity. Caddies are fun, and the snack shack is dangerously well-stocked. I hit a bad shot, the caddie patted my back and said, 'That's why they call it golf.' Best therapy I've had all year.

Brookhaven surprised me with its hospitality. Three renovated courses, each with its own personality, and all in good shape. The racquet sports complex deserves its awards, and the resort style pools made me want to skip the back nine entirely. Staff are attentive, friendly, and remembered my name by the second visit. It's family friendly, which means I had to share the tee box with some kids, but they were polite. The atmosphere is welcoming, unstuffy. I might even bring my in-laws. Maybe.

Riverchase is fine, which is damning with faint praise, I know. The layout has some fun holes, and the staff is friendly enough. But the conditions are inconsistent, like a golfer who's great one day and sprays it the next. The clubhouse is basic, the maintenance lacks polish. It's affordable, so you won't feel robbed, but you won't feel pampered either. I played a casual round, enjoyed a few good drives, and left without any burning desire to return. Not worth a special trip, but if you're nearby and desperate, it works.

Bent Tree has the best greens in the city, and I'll fight anyone who disagrees. They roll true, hold approach shots, and don't punish you for a slightly off line. The staff treats you like family, which is either heartwarming or exhausting depending on your mood. The food is excellent, and the event atmosphere is lively without being chaotic. It's unstuffy, welcoming, and the kind of place where you can actually relax. I wore a T-shirt and no one blinked. That's my kind of club.

Not worth a special trip

Cowboys Golf Club is a full-on production. The greens are fast as tour, and the rough has a mean streak. Tee shots demand bravery, and the terrain changes keep you guessing. Food is exceptional all day, which is dangerous because I ate two burgers. The staff handles groups with professional ease, so my bachelor party didn't devolve into chaos. It's fun, challenging, and a little gimmicky with the cowboy theme, but I'll take it. My only grumble: I lost four balls. My scorecard is a war crime.

The Clubs of Prestonwood, The Hills, is a sleeper hit. The staff and range shine bright, and the practice area is where I wasted an hour before I even teed off. Great value for a prime location, and you get two clubs under one membership, which is a bargain. Conditioning is impeccable, and the pros are friendly enough to fix your swing without making you feel stupid. I had a lesson that actually helped. That's rare. I'm still suspicious, but pleasantly so.

Gleneagles is a social club that happens to have golf. The weddings are handled with a warm professionalism that made me wish I were the groom, though I'd have to find a bride first. Volunteer events are hosted graciously, and the kitchen earns genuine praise for the grilled veggies, which is a sentence I never thought I'd write. The brisket impressed my beef loving uncle, who is notoriously hard to please. The course isn't the main event, but it's nice enough for a round after a ceremony. I went for the food, stayed for the sunset.

Sherrill Park is the public course that keeps getting better. Best conditions in twenty years, which is a bold claim, but I've been playing here long enough to see the transformation. Two fun, scoreable courses, and a short game area that's top notch for chipping away your frustrations. Greens are excellent, and the value is solid for a city run track. I shot a personal best, then ruined it on the last hole, but I can't blame the course. It's honest golf. I'll be back next week to try again.

Royal Oaks is the kind of place that makes you feel like you've wandered into a golf fantasy, but with better snacks. The course is manicured to the millimetre, and the range area is so good I almost forgot to play. Ricky, the resident raconteur, shared stories that had my foursome laughing so hard we missed our tee time by ten minutes. The food was fantastic, service impeccable. It's a bucket list experience, no question. My only complaint: I had to leave. And that the dress code made me tuck in my shirt, which I resent on principle.

Coyote Ridge hides its teeth behind a pretty face. The fairways are gorgeous, but they'll punish a lazy swing. The driving range is top-notch, with enough space to work on your slice without hitting the car next to you. The clubhouse has a fireplace that makes you want to linger, and the carts come stocked with towels, which I appreciated after a sweaty round. Greens fees are fair, and you get real value for your dollar. I grumbled at the tough par 5s, but I keep coming back. That says something.
